The garden was a blank canvas of overgrown lawn surrounded by a mature hedgerow. The brief was to create a lush oasis for wildlife by adding a natural pool as the focal point. Surrounding the pool is a variety of plants to provide a complexity of habitat, colour and form, alongside fruit trees and flowering shrubs. Consideration was also given to the passage of light throughout the space, with the borders being backlit by morning and evening sun, and the pool acting as a sky mirror.

Drag to compare

As the planting has matured, the pond and its oak boardwalk have settled into the garden. Oxeye daisies and Verbena bonariensis now decide for themselves where they want to be, softening the line between deck and water. Maintenance has reduced over time as self-seeders fill the gaps and cover the soil, and only a light hand is needed to edit.
The pond filters itself through planting alone, so there is chemical-free swimming and a habitat for wildlife. The garden brings a sense of peace and calm, and you can fully immerse yourself in its ecosystem.
“The planting around the pool has a wild and meadowy feel, so that as you swim, you feel immersed in your surroundings.”
